Empire Eclipse – Crash 3 Level

In preparation for applying to a course I have wanted to do, a piece of advice they gave us was to design a new level / mission for a beloved game.
This small post will just be to show some back and forth between my initial designs and concepting, also a small bit of the 3D modelling that was done.
To start I looked into reference images from Roman style buildings, pillars etc. Also the only small bit we got in the actual game was from the Tiny Tiger boss fight.

Lots of pillar ideas (see my book) as well as red flags, cracked bricks and statues.
After emailing my artist these as well as my kinda awful drawings of pillars this is the photos I got back.

sdfsdf.jpg

The only notes I had from this are that the colours need to be more yellow to suit with the types of stone used, this was fixed straight away, other than that though I was stoked with how they turned out.
Next point was an enemy in the game, the Caesar lab assistant enemy. Crash 3 has a very specific style of humanoid enemy, all with really long feet and hands, INCREDIBLY skinny legs and arms with a kinda strange rectangular head.

These are some reference images I found that are seen throughout the game. ^^^

After sitting on call for a while explaining my idea for the enemy, this is what we settled on and I love it, it fits perfectly to the theme!
My idea for the weapon to have him hold would be a simple dagger, also a fun little nod to Caesar being stabbed in the back (you have to hit the enemy in the back as well).

Coming up to my interview the 3d model plus the colour I wanted for the pillars has been completed too which is super cool!

Big shout out to Floss for working with me on this, taking my vision and turning it into reality !

Crash Twinsanity IS A GOOD GAME!

“What is Crash Twinsanity?” The first question that probably came to mind and a bothersome one at that.
Crash Twinsanity is an underappreciated, undervalued and unfairly judged BANGER of a game made my Traveller’s Tale in 2004.
The next question is, why am I writing about this? Well for starters a quick numbers comparison, globally Twinsanity sold 640 thousand copies, not bad right? Well Crash 1 sold 6.62m, Crash 2 sold 7.58m, Crash 3 sold 6.82m and even Wrath of Cortex, a re-skinned Crash 3 sold 5.42m, so actually it’s AWFUL. (Numbers according to VGC)
In terms of reviews of the game, the most notable ones are as follows:

64% metacritic
7.3/10 Gamespot
5/10 Videogamer.com

I am writing about this pretty averagely scored game because it is one of the best Crash games to ever be released, not convinced? Fantastic.

First and foremost the reason why Crash Bandicoot was so successful was down to its core game play, fun, smooth and clever platforming.
This never changed in the first 3 and most successful games, in fact, fairly minimal changed within those 3 games and this is where Twinsanity really shines.
Apposing what I have read in reviews, it keeps with these core game play mechanics but actually adds to them. Your newly formed frienemy Cortex can be thrown, smashed and used as a snowboard through the levels with you as well as the puzzles being added to emphasis these new mechanics.

Art2_2.jpg

The hub world system has been done away with, instead leading you through a BEAUTIFUL directed open world.
The beach and forest levels quickly turn into underground caverns, freezing icebergs and Gothic high schools that gets crazier and way more fun as you go.
The game play never feels repetitive, in fact quite the opposite, all of the fun variations to the environments lead to new mini games, platforming and much more.

Now let’s hit one of the main reasons why I believe this game is incredible.
The Soundtrack.
THE SOUNDTRACK.
I cannot emphasis how perfect the soundtrack is for this game, composed by Spiralmouth an a Capella group that created the single most perfect atmosphere for every single level. Without being able to even fully appreciate it, just listen to a few of THESE.
The game design worked in with the brilliant sound design makes every single level an absolute delight to run through, intense and silly are the two main themes in these.
Another point to emphasis is this game is ACTUALLY silly and SO much fun. Between strange interacts with Crash and Cortex that you can’t help but laugh at to the hilariously animated interacts between Crash and ANY enemy.

tumblr_n3kyfpNpbH1rha254o2_500.gif

Now to be fair to the other side so I’m not incredibly bias, the puzzles about halfway through the game are fun but are very fidgety and prone to not working.
There has been several cases of some of the later game bosses mechanics not working, this happened to me when a grapple hook system for a boss fight just didn’t work until I reset the game.

In the fight to keep this whole thing short, because I could go for hours, I want to show that even through some minimal flaws how fun this game is.
– The art design through the whole game is fantastic, even the loading screens are done in a gorgeous cartoon art style.
– The game feels smooth and not clunky other than a few movements with Cortex.
– The collectibles that replace the gems are fun to find and hidden well enough to be a challenge but not unfair.
– The user interface is good, simple pause menu and easy to see your collectibles, if you missed any etc.

Honestly at the end of the day, if you don’t have a PlayStation 2 or a way to emulate it, I probably wouldn’t stress to go get one just to play Twinsanity.
Though the most important note to end on is the sheer joy and fun that this game as an experience is.
The most fun and silly time you can have in any PS2 game and a huge recommendation if you have the console lying around.

Try, Fail, Review and Improve!

Following on from the Digital Artifact that my friend and I did last semester, we realised there was a big need for change.
Biting off more than you can chew can be very dangerous and for us, it was, so much undefined content, random videos etc. Led to a lot of wasted time and a product we weren’t too happy with.
Luckily though I’ve got a great mate and while I was away on holiday he took the initiate in spamming me with messages about how to do this DA properly focused and also be something we enjoyed a lot.

39442803_252291545414484_3291426051028156416_n.jpg

I took this idea and ran with it, pitching back and forth until we found something we were happy with. The idea we settled on is having a podcast twice a week, streamed on twitch than edited and uploaded to Youtube (Woo! Editing 1-2 hours of a podcast twice a week -.-) that condensed WWE, New Japan, Indie wrestling, NXT and a few other promotions into discussion topics that a casual fan could follow along with. I get to talk about the story lines/matches I loved and Jesse gets to do the same all while sticking to schedule so we don’t go off for hours.
Dividing the work between us, research seemed more manageable even though this subject is extremely content heavy. I truly believe there is a market for something like this, Twitch has a severe lack of Wrestling personalities and podcasts as well as podcasts that encompass more than one promotion being few and far between.
With this in mind we have just watched one of WWE’s biggest pay per views of the year Summer Slam with a notepad and pen, ready to give our first podcast a red hot go!

Mario Odyssey – In Depth Review

Almost a year after the release of Mario Odyssey, I finally picked up a Nintendo Switch and jumped on Super Mario 64’s spiritual successor (a phrase said to me by another reviewer which so perfectly describes this).
The expectation was very high, though not being the biggest Nintendo fan I guess you could say there was a lot of room for me to be impressed, and I was.

The story is as basic as almost every other Mario game, though with a few key differences to keep it interesting. Bowser steals Peach, there is a not at all creepy wedding being forced upon her and you must save her with the help of a new magic hat, nothing out of the ordinary for the Italian plumber.
The hat (Cappy) allows you to control most living things you throw it at, dinosaurs and Bullet Bills included, while also allowing for much more unique movement and combat than previously in Mario titles.

Super-Mario-Odyssey.gif
Other than the mind controlling headwear, most of the movement and gameplay is fairly stock standard for Mario, platforming through a variety of levels full to the brim with fun collectables, mini games and enemies.

Super Mario Odyssey seamlessly brings together the loveable aspects of all prior Mario titles, with core 3D gameplay of Super Mario 64 and Galaxy being the base to weave in even 2D Mario Bros segments. Collectables have been tweaked slightly, the classic stars have been replaced with moons, special purple coins have been added as an additional currency as well as the normal gold coins. This might seem like a lot of collectables, and believe me – it is.
With over 900 total moons available to find, buy in stores and access in post game content there is NO shortage of them to find, yet somehow you never lose the constant feeling of reward.
Especially in games inclusive of a young audience, there’s a thin line between rewarding the player and games feeling too easy. The magic of this game is the varying levels of complexity in the locations of the collectables, this never makes the game feel too easy and certainly never simply too hard for a less experienced player. I will admit, even as a grown adult with plenty of 3D platformer experience, it was incredibly daunting to spend 4 hours on a level and find out I had less than half the moons of that area. I can imagine a less adept player would feel completely disheartened by the sheer quantity of hard to find goals. Another problem with this many collectables is that though for the most part they are in interesting and unique locations, some can feel incredibly cheap, being almost impossible to find if you don’t use hints or guides.

6107t6lyk5qz.gif

Visually this game stands up to the bar that the stunning Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild set for the Switch’s figurehead titles. Odyssey is incredibly polished, even played on a 4k TV it keeps this quality and remains clean. The user interface for the game is pretty simple and clean, the first in game menu has only 5 options, the main one being the multiplayer. The second in game menu, however, holds the map and a lot of information on the sides. This second menu feels a little inconvenient when looking for a certain place or NPC location, on top of this the collectables list is also accessed through this same menu, which made it feel a little messy.

Each level has a distinct style, feel, and theme, from jungles to deserts and even hyperrealistic cities. The soundtrack of each level is perfect for the theme, incredibly dynamic and changes depending on which part of the area you explore. For example, Mariachi music on entering the Mexican inspired Sand Kingdom town, classic jungle music for Wooded Kingdom (Donkey Kong Country-esque), even gritty urban transitioning to smooth jazz for Metro Kingdom, giving a living feel to the world itself. Key mechanics emphasise the individuality of each location, whether it is climbing tall jungle trees or riding a Sphinx statue to get from location to location.

b14425ee274e4ebee546f91e06949eb9ea21ec71_hq.gif
The design of the varying locations really shines when exploring each area, being very open and free for players to explore. Each environment allows for freedom but is very clear about the direction of the level. It’s common to get lost in most open world games and this is usually prevented with a mini map and marker. Instead, in Odyssey the level design itself is always used to let you know where you should be going. Though free to explore as you please, the progressive direction of the level is clearly marked either with collectables or vertical movement. What is impressive about this level design is that upon reflection I realise how easily the levels abuse our natural instinct to climb towards our goal.

A week ago I never would have thought I’d be suggesting to someone to buy the new Mario game but objectively, it’s one of the best games to come out last year.
At it’s core Super Mario Odyssey just an incredibly fun experience, packed full of content and collectable excitement. HowLongToBeat puts the main story time around 12 hours and the story plus extra at 25 hours, though any casual play through will last WAY longer than that.
If you don’t have a switch, maybe wait for more titles but if you like Mario or 3D platformers in any way then it is worth buying the console for, especially with Christmas sales not too far away!

Liar, Liar News On Fire!

In the ever expanding world of online media, news and its practitioners must have such a huge understanding of misinformation, half truths and straight up lies created online.
This is fake news, gaining the like of influencers such as Donald Trump but what it actually is seems to be a confusing topic.
This blog will help you understand exactly what this is and how to avoid it especially if you are or hope to one day be a media practitioner yourself as well as some examples of why this is so important.
The two key examples of how harmful not understanding fake news can be that I will use is Lewis Spears on A Current Affair and Drama Alert’s fake news piece on a RSGloryAndGold (Aka Tony).

The term Fake News has become a buzzword in the last year or so but the term isn’t exactly new, its definition has changed quite a lot though but basing off Tandoc, Lim and Ling’s research the main six are ‘(1) news satire, (2) new parody, (3) fabrication, (4) manipulation, (5) advertising and (6) propaganda’ (Tandoc, Lim and Ling, 2017) at times mixing multiple of these into one.
Taking many different forms the main component is misinformation or misdirection, to either sway the opinion of the reader to believe something false or a different opinion tot their original with untrue facts.

The first was a cyber bully ‘investigation’ that A Current Affair was going to run back in 2012, the main target of which was Lewis Spears.
The piece was advertised for a number of weeks before being taken down because, it was fake. There was no cyber bullying occurring, the girl who had been portrayed as the victim was paid by Lewis and the interview that was conducted with him was complete lies purely to prove the lack of research conducted by main stream television media.
The original exposing video was taken day but a few remain, this is one of the last remaining videos of it up.

This is a perfect example of trust being lost with practitioners who don’t do their research and buy into fake news being spread, with trust of main stream media outlets at an all time low this is something incredible harmful to that.

The next is a little bit more harsh, a strong indicator of what impacts this can have.
Daniel Keem is a presenter/researcher etc. that runs the channel Drama Alert, a channel that reports on everything from online entertainers to politics.
In 2016 he had a story that “I thought was vetted and I thought was correct” (Keem, 2018) but turned out to have been glossed over.
Tony, an older man who streams World of Warcraft had a resemblance to a convicted pedophile who was released from jail not too long prior, having just taken the article at face value then compared the faces it was reported that these two people were the same person. The result was thousands of of people harassing and abusing the man in real time (as Twitch is live), the reaction which you can see here if you feel like having a really bad day.
These examples are why it is so incredibly important as a media practitioner to take extra steps which it comes to online news.
The time of in person research, physical interviews and paper are being left behind at a rapid pace and trust is something easily broken in the world of online media so that is why it is imperative to maintain a deep understanding of where this can go wrong.

Marketing Yourself

In this current day where everything about your personal life, friends, family etc. Is displayed online for anyone to see you need to be using it to your advantage. This year there has been several cases brought up asking the question ‘is it right for your employer to google you before hiring you’ and a lot of people are agreeing with them doing it. We all must micro manage ourselves so that we can look our best in front of everyone, not to be fake but to market ourselves the best way you possible can to give yourself the edge over everyone else. (Soundcloud Post)

The Walking Narrative.

When looking into transmedia narratives one franchise sticks out to me more than any other, The Walking dead. This franchise has gone from mainstream television, comic books, visual novels and even video games, telling multiple stories over multiple platforms, both interactive and one way. The show has been very successful and the game has had over 50 Game Of The Year wins the year it was released. This is a very good example of transmedia narratives as there are multiple story lines being told from multiple different platforms but are still under the same franchise.rick-carl-snow.jpg

Interactive Videos Done RIGHT!

For this weeks subject of Craft and Digital making I’ve decided to blog about 360 video technology. This video was done by Achievement Hunter as a test run and a comedy video where you are able to move the camera around manually, allowing you to look at whatever you want, though don’t get this confused with virtual reality, no headset is needed for this! You are able to click and drag the mouse to look wherever you want, the quality can range from 480p to 2160p, this opens the gateway to huge creativity in modern content. Instead of having to have multiple camera angles, there can be 360 degrees of camera angles and the audience is able to pick which they prefer !ytgu.jpg

The Top Cut Isn’t Cutting It.

The progression of technologies has allowed the audience of tradition media to challenge the pillar that it stands on. New forms of content creating are sweeping through the internet and are being consumed by more people than tradition media is on all grounds. Although the credibility of new content is often seen as second best to mainstream media outlets e.g. 9 News, 10 News (lots of numbers…), although is this particularly true? Not at all, there are a whole lot of garbage internet outlets as there are with traditional media but just because technology has allowed for audience to be active in creating content does not mean that it diminishes
the value of what is being said by them. (The meme is regarding Philip Defranco, proof the internet has reliable sources.)

Remix the Remix

Remix culture has been going for years now, more so than people realise. In it’s base form the ‘cover’ or ‘parody’ of a song can often be this exact thing, Weird Al Yankovic (see Fat, White and Nerdy and Canadian Idiot) can be credited as one of the first parody makers. Though why is this needed? This concept of remodeling or reworking songs for different purposes, whether it to be entertain or help the original product pushes forward creativity and allows us to enjoy something we intentionally did once more just in a new form!
